Waiting for your state tax refund can feel like a lifetime, but fortunately, the Maryland Comptroller of the Treasury provides easy and quick ways to monitor its journey. Knowing which tools to use and when to check can save you stress and provide clarity on when your funds will arrive.

Here is a simple, step-by-step guide on how to check the status of your Maryland income tax refund.

The Official Online Refund Status Tool

The fastest and most common way to check your refund is through the Comptroller's website. This online tool gives you the most up-to-date information on your return's status.

What You Need:

You must have the following three pieces of information exactly as they appear on your filed return:

  1. Your Social Security Number (SSN): If you filed jointly, use the first SSN listed on the return.
  2. The Exact Refund Amount: This must be entered in dollars and cents (e.g., 500.00).

How to Use It:

  • Navigate to the official "Want To Check On Your Current Year Refund?" page on the Comptroller of Maryland website.
  • Enter your SSN and the exact refund amount requested.
  • Click "Check Status" to view your result.

The tool will typically show one of three statuses: Received and Processing, Approved, or Sent/Issued.

Automated Phone System

If you prefer to check by phone, the Comptroller maintains an automated hotline. You will need the same SSN and exact refund amount to access the information.

Hotline Numbers:

  • Central Maryland: 410-260-7701
  • Toll-Free (Outside Central Maryland): 1-800-218-8160

When to Start Checking

Timing is crucial. Checking too early can be frustrating as the system may not yet reflect your return's acceptance.

  • Electronic Filers (E-file): Wait at least 10 days from the date your tax preparation software confirmed the return was accepted by the state.
  • Paper Filers: Due to the manual processing required, it is best to wait approximately 30 days before checking your status online or calling the hotline.

If your status shows a delay or you have been waiting significantly longer than the typical 2-4 week timeline for e-filers, you may need to contact the Taxpayer Services Division at 410-260-7980 for further assistance.
